Rogers Park activist group Northside POWER joined almost five thousand people last week in a well-organized demonstration that concluded three days of actions at the American Banking Association (ABA) convention in Chicago.
Northside P.O.W.E.R. (The acronym stands for “People Organized to Work, Educate and Restore”) is the community organizing arm of the Good News Community Kitchen (GNCK), a Rogers Park facility that feeds between 130 and 180 people each night of the year.
According to P.O.W.E.R. Organizer Cindy Bush: “Northside P.O.W.E.R. was founded about 5 years ago because the GNCK board, patrons and partners decided to become an anti-hunger organization that not only feeds people, but also, through advocacy and community organizing, addresses the causes of poverty and hunger.”

Listening to the President’s Address on Healthcare Reform from a Hospital Room
By Robert Rudner
A radio cord was attached to my vitals to keep the emergency staff informed. As for nourishment, liquids plus insulin were my meal along with a constant flow of the laxative GoLYTELY.
After the President’s speech on reforming health insurance, I would move my IV line around and situate myself on a commode. Then FOX News bore its commentary upon me while the commode bucket filled with something the color of borscht that was not borscht.
Conclusion: If we ever get Single-Payer Healthcare, it will have to be through the courts.
Treating health as a commodity is like treating people as a commodity, which went out with the Emancipation Proclamation. If our own bodies can no longer be owned, the condition of our bodies should not be treated as property.

State Representative Harry Osterman (D-14th) hosted about 150 people at Osterman Beach (named after his mother, Kathy Osterman) for a clean-up operation that scoured the sand and the park. It also featured an appearance by Illinois Governor Pat Quinn.
The Governor spoke briefly about the importance of conservation and the commitment of local people to the community beach. Rep. Osterman thanked the numerous high school student volunteers and the people who live near the beach and care for it year round.
“Our community is very lucky to have access to beautiful public beaches,” said Osterman.

To the Editor:
Germs. Yet another thing wrong with privatizing public sector jobs: germs. In 1996, Chicago Public Schools privatized janitorial services. To trim costs, they cut janitors’ jobs and contracted them out instead to a company that doesn’t provide paid sick time.
Back then, it was a short-sighted way to save money. Rather than resolving productivity disputes with more accountability, it pitted students against poorly paid employees. Today, in the era of the H1N1 virus, privatization’s unforeseen consequences are even worse.
It’s hard to believe that the contractor who provides janitors to 600 Chicago schools does not allow any paid sick days. If this outrages you, it should. As the Center for Disease Control says, and as the Secretary of Health and Human Services implores, sick people should stay home and recover.

On the way to U. S. Representative Jan Schakowsky’s health-care town-hall meeting in Skokie, I felt a bit anxious. Would there be angry, screaming people? Would weirdos show up with guns?
With all the coverage about disruptive kooks, I was concerned there wouldn’t be any point in attending the meeting.
Oh, how wrong I was.
I have already read so much on the topic of American health care reform that it’s hard to present me with new information. That turned out to be true of the information that was presented at the meeting – Rep. Schakowsky spent almost all of the time stating and restating the basics of the plan.
