President Clinton speaks at the Palmer HouseBy James Ginderske

For many Chicagoans, the original panics and tragedies of the HIV/AIDS pandemic seem almost ancient, as a new generation comes of age amid steadily progressing treatment options, prevention initiatives, and fading social stigma among people they know.

But such optimism is fragile when it pertains to such a pernicious disease, and utterly dependent, according to the World Health Organization and smaller agencies on continued organized efforts to end its presence.

One of those local actors is Chicago House, whose work on behalf of housing, health care, and employment for HIV/AIDS patients goes back decades, to the beginnings of HIV in Chicago.

To its CEO Reverend Stan Sloan and the volunteers and staff at Chicago House these are challenging times that hold new hope, great concern, and tremendous opportunity.

When people ask me, “what have you been up to?” I reply with a sparkle in my eye. Being in charge of the creative arts program at CJE SeniorLife’s Weinberg Community for Senior Living in Deerfield, I’ve been having a joy-filled, fun time with older adults, many of whom are in their 80s and 90s.

I’m also an expressive arts therapist, with 19 years of experience helping people feel safe enough to find their voice and express themselves. This year, my residents at Weinberg have been expressing their incredible voices through the arts.

Over the course of the past year, we have had art openings like “Trees of Life” and “A Sea World,” and a musical production called “Gidwitz Lights,” which displayed how we could all be lights into our world by sharing our creative gifts.

The media respond to Kilmer closingBy Steve Wilson

Kilmer Elementary School parent Arlette Crawford felt on Tuesday that there might be a problem with swine flu at the school, as so many students apparently were out sick. As it turns out, she was right.

“One student sitting next to my daughter was sneezing with chills and a fever,” Crawford said, adding that a friend of hers called her at 5 a.m. Wednesday morning about the flu concern at Kilmer.

A press release from the Chicago Public Schools’ Office of Specialized Services reported “a confirmed case” of swine influenza at Kilmer, which is located at 6700 N. Greenview Ave. in Rogers Park, and that as of Wednesday the school would remain closed until further notice.
