The White House vs. FOX PDF Print E-mail
Editorial

It is with some amusement we have been viewing the “controversy” of Fox News’ ostracism from consideration as a legitimate press organization by the White House.

As the inside the Beltway, mainstream media wrings its hands and declares the White House action to be an onerous attempt to manipulate the press, it seems like it might be a good idea to remember that the object of their concern is an organization those same media outlets have derided for years as the industry standard for heavily biased coverage, often verging on propaganda.

Fox has been documented as a network that issues memos directing its employees to offer what most reasonable people would consider strongly biased reporting.

Asking Some Hard Questions about the War in Afghanistan PDF Print E-mail
Editorial
Friday, 16 October 2009 21:05
As the war in Afghanistan enters its eighth year, we face tough choices. This debate, though hard is a welcome change from the Bush years of arbitrary and often ill-considered placement of military assets.

We know that unlike the Iraq War, this country did not start the Afghan War, an action that began with the September 11th massacre of thousands of civilians on the streets of New York. If ever a military response were called for, that attack was clearly it, but the duration and effectiveness of that response must now be called into question.

Prior to New York, American involvement in the Afghan region included the largest CIA covert military operation in history, and whatever one’s views are of such actions the multi-national drive to expel the old Soviet Union was successful, but only in a limited, military way.

We Could All Use Some Back to School Lessons PDF Print E-mail
Editorial

Wrong R's, U.S.With the beginning of another academic cycle, Chicago’s newly digitized airwaves filled with typical back-to-school images (Bud Billiken parade footage punctuated by a plethora of commercials pushing sales on clothes and supplies), but some more strident and disturbing video found its way into the mix this year.

In case you missed it, and that’s unlikely considering the mainstream media’s fixation on the controversy, a number of parents from conservative households were horrified by the news that a back-to-school address by President Obama was slated to be shown in many of our nation’s schools.

Most received word of this “government intrusion” from the sometimes entertaining but never informative demagogues who spout hate and conspiracy on Fox News and Talk Radio. The parents’ reactions ranged from red-faced rage at another sign of the impending socialist apocalypse to melodramatic tears over an inescapable liberal brainwashing.

Chicago’s Olympic Bid Fails, But Its Legacy Can Still Meet with Success PDF Print E-mail
Editorial

olympics cartoonIt was quite something to watch our Mayor, our President, our Oprah, and the assorted other celebrities and dignitaries who boarded planes to pitch our City in Copenhagen come home on October 2 with their dreams deferred. They return to a town where they are accustomed to carrying on uncontested demonstrations of whim and whimsy. This defeat must truly sting.

To some extent, it was a rejection of the whole city by a hundred potentates, who decided somewhat arbitrarily that Chicago, for all it has to offer, isn’t the best place the world can find to host the Games. For our part, there was never any question about the ability to put on an amazing and unforgettable Olympics.

Our lake front alone can’t help but provide the most dramatic background imaginable for such an event.

Financial issues, of course, were less clear-cut and confusion around that critical issue and a general lack of community involvement in the bid process were troubling.

What Do We Get for those Higher Cook County Taxes? PDF Print E-mail
Editorial
Friday, 04 September 2009 19:59
Cook County Board President Todd Stroger and his machine allies won the right to continue an unnecessary and regressive tax on September 1.

Rather than join in with the general outrage that is rightly on other editorial pages, we’ll discuss the local consequences of bad Cook County government.

Perhaps the most obvious result of this action is that it continues an incentive for shoppers and businesses near County borders to relocate into the more tax-friendly environments close by.
